Your insecurities are a creative gold mine

aka How I come up with stuff to write about every day

Whenever I have trouble thinking of a topic for these daily letters, I turn to my insecurities. It’s easy because I have so many of them.

To name just a few:

• What if no one cares about my art?

• What if I don’t have anything worthwhile to say?

• What if I’m doing it wrong?

• I don’t have enough energy.

• What if I’m actually just an imposter?

• What if I’m too old?

• But it has to be perfect!

This is my “insecure” face

But look! See what happened there? Like lead into gold, I turned my insecurities into art (or at least some of my all-time most popular letters). I’m an insecurity alchemist! 🧪✨

Tee hee, I just made myself giggle.

I mean it, though. Your insecurities are a creative goldmine. They’re rich in meaning and emotion and all the messy gorgeousness that is you. They’re real. They’re compelling. They’re so fucking interesting.

Insecurity is the stuff that great art is made of.
