There's so much truth in this short piece. For the past year or so, I've been working on "de-socializing" myself -- removing all the old labels and beliefs imposed by others. I want to see who is really in there, before other people started telling me. I'm not explaining this very well, but it is a very revealing "project." I am definitely not the person I thought I was. Don't mean to be pushy, but I do hope you write more about this.

Thanks for sharing, Marie! This is a recurring theme for me, so I'm sure it will show up here again, but I do appreciate knowing that it resonates with you, too.

I’ve been thinking about this recently, too. I recalled an affirmation I created during a course today and realised it’s still relevant: I am calm, confident and successful and my purpose in life is to play and have fun. We can always become who we really are. It’s just a case of remembering how.

Ah yes, this has been on my mind for the past couple of weeks. I bumped into an old colleague from a student bar job I had 13 years ago. As far as I could remember I wasn’t well liked there, I didn’t do well with superiors, and nobody was sad when I left. Whenever I thought of that job I thought of it as a failure and that everyone there thought I was weird.

Well I bumped into this colleague and we started talking and reminiscing… I’m not sure how it came up but to my utter shock people talked about my leaving for weeks after, saying how nothing gets done properly any more. That they miss my company. That they looked up to me. I was perceived basically in the opposite way to how I felt. Isn’t that such a waste of time?

I love this story. Amazing how our self-perceptions can get it so wrong!
