great read! I think it's deeply true that reducing your options actually births better creative results. There is something completely paralyzing about having to choose from EVERYTHING that exists. Having a narrow palette means you already sort of know what you're doing, and even in that narrow space there is room for infinite variety and surprise.
I agree! I used to be really resistant to the idea of narrowing, but I've since learned that ironically, narrowing down can actually open up MORE creative possibilities!
yeah it definitely feels limiting when you first think about it. But burrowing down into something is a very eye-opening experience. As long as you butterfly around from thing to thing you never really have to wrestle with your insecurities and your limitations. You can always be like 'well ok I'm new to this medium maybe it's just not for me, that's why it didn't work out the way I thought...' And for sure that's fun too, I like playing with things. But taking one thing and going 'alright let's see where you and I end up if we just wrestle for years'..... that's a different type of enlightenment.
Yes!! It's so overwhelming to have all the options. Good things happen at that place where you find a way to start simply, knowing you can adapt or move on. I love how you describe the process - it's like sparking little creative relationships and seeing where the two of you go together!
