Jan is a multipotentialite. The number of things she had done amazed me. Marrying creativity— what a profound way to embrace creativity in our lives. I can understand the level of commitment we need to make to make our creativity work. Just love this phrase because it inspires me to create more. Thanks for this interview Robin. Keep doing such inspiring interviews.
Thanks Shanjitha, wow, I like that word multipotentialite! I’ve never heard it before. Yes even just saying the words ‘marry creativity’ puts everything else In perspective. I’ll never forget the first time I said it to my students in this huge, steeply raked University lecture theatre. ‘Forget about careers, forget about money, forget about relationships, Marry Creativity! It blew their minds!
Marry Creativity!" What a brilliant metaphor! It perfectly captures the dedication and passion required for a fulfilling creative life. It's not just about producing art; it's about embracing a mindset of curiosity, exploration, and continuous learning. Your words have inspired me to renew my vows with my own creative pursuits.
Oh so glad to hear it Alexander! I learned this at age 18 when I was invited to join an experimental theatre group in Melbourne. We were inspired by the Living Theatre and the Wooster group. The leader of the group asked if I could put our work before all else, friends, family, relationships. That the creative work must come first. I said I DO, and have never looked back.
As someone who loves creativity, I can imagine how it might have resonated with your students at the lecture. Thanks Jan, for introducing us to this beautiful phrase.

I keep saying it, and I'll say it again. Jan is such a badass.
