Today is not the day for rules and good manners.
Today, we forget that we are civilized beings who speak softly and queue in proper lines.
Today, we peel away society’s demands like a snake sloughs off old skin. We molt expectations like black feathers, shed what isn’t ours until we are only ourselves — naked, fierce, frightening.
Today, we cast aside our prescribed roles, our pretty words, our submissive nods. We release tight shoulders, unlock clenched jaws that ache from all the words we’ve bitten back.
Today, we let our feelings do the biting.
Today, we stop pretending old wounds have healed or that they never existed in the first place. We pick at the polite scabs that cover our bodies; we only grew them, after all, to spare you the distaste of our suffering.
Today, we bleed freely.
Today, we unleash the wildness in our blood. We feel the forest in our bones, the moonlight on our skin.
Today, we share breath with our ancestors. We howl as they howled. We revel as they reveled. We stomp bare earth with bare feet and know we are alive.
Today, we forget that we are civilized beings.
Today, we go feral.
